HOW TO CHOOSE A SOFA

As a centerpiece in the living room, your sofa has to be both functional and aesthetical.

We want it confortable, as for some of us, it's a second bed.

And its look will play a key role in your decoration.

As a sofa is also representing a high expense, we all look for easy-to-care and sustainable options.

In order to meet all these criteria, here is how you can choose a sofa safely.

1/ THE SIZE

Depth, number of seats: the size of your sofa has to be calculated precisely.

No matter where you place it (in the middle of the room, or against a wall), it will impact the circulation like no other piece of furniture.

To make sure you can walk easily around, you have to consider all these points:

- Doors and windows openings

- Minimum space of 40 cm in between the sofa and the coffee table (or another piece of furniture).

The size of your sofa is also going to impact the size of the whole room visually.

A size which is too small will make the space cold and empty.

On the opposite, a massive sofa is going to give an impression that your living room is smaller than it is.

To select an appropriate size, we recommend you to draw the outlines of your sofa on the floor with tape beforehand.

It will give you a view at the right scale of the room it's going to take.

Note that some brands also provide 3D simulators where you can place a picture of their sofa directly into your room.

2/ THE COMPOSITION

Straight, convertible or a corner sofa ?

Once you've determined the size of your sofa, pick a composition which is adapted to the room and your needs.

Indeed, a corner sofa will be perfect for a big space and a convertible option will require a room large enough.

Therefore, you need to select a composition that will match your needs (large family, bed for friends) but that will also be adapted to the size of the room.

Even though you have a large living room, we recommend to go for a straight option combined with several lounge chairs rather than having a too massive sofa.

3/ COMFORT

No matter what style or composition you choose, your sofa has to be CONFORTABLE !

But if we all agree on that, the definition of confort is not the same from a person to another.

Some will prefer a consistent firm seat while other people will die for an extra soft one.

To make sure your future sofa is matching your expectations, you need to look at these criteria:

- Suspension type: straps or springs.

- Foam density.

- Compare the measures vs your body type (depth of seat, height of backseat).

- The fabric feeling.

- The seats separations.

4/ THE FABRIC

Once you've found your dream sofa and made sure it fitted all your criteria, the next step will be the fabric choice.

This last choice is not only a question of aesthetic.

It will also impact your comfort, like we mentioned earlier, and that explains why cotton is such a popular option.

You'll also have to think about the care instructions, which is essential when you have kids or a pet. Even though, in these cases, we advise you to go for a removable cover.

And last but not least, make sure the color you want is available in the fabric you select. Because, yes, a colored sofa is the perfect way to bring in color in a "too white" interior if you're scared to paint your walls.
